Los Gatos Weekly-TimesBusiness BriefsLos Gatan moves up in architecture firm Los Gatos resident Mirella Sion, a designer and project manager with Campbell-based Sugimura & Associates/Architects, was promoted in July to the position of associate. A graduate of the University of Architecture, Ion Mincu in Bucharest, Romania, Sion has more than 20 years of experience in her field. She joined Sugimura & Associates/Architects in 1986, where she worked on projects including interiors, remodeling, building additions, marketing, in-house graphics and photography. Mount Holyoke College elects a local trustee Alicia I. Barela, a Los Gatos resident and alumna of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, joined the school's board of trustees on July 1 and will serve a five-year term. Barela is a physician in the obstetrics/gynecology department with the Permanente Medical Group in San Jose. After graduating from Mount Holyoke with a degree in Latin American studies, she received a doctorate in medicine from Yale University and a fellowship from the American College of Ob/Gyn. She is second vice president of the California Hispanic Medical Association and a member of Friends of the Library in Los Gatos, the Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy, among other associations. Caere elects two new directors to its board Caere Corporation, a Los Gatos high-tech firm that manufactures computer-scanner software and document-management software, elected two new members to its board of directors in July. Betsy S. Atkins currently serves on the boards of directors for Ascend Communications Corp., Secure Computing Inc., Selectica, Inc. and Silicon Valley Networks Inc. Joseph J. Francesconi is president and CEO of Network Equipment Technologies. He also spent 16 years with Amdahl Corporation and held several positions with IBM. Coldwell Banker hires new local associates Two new full-time sales associates have joined Coldwell Banker's Los Gatos branch office, located at 325 Los Gatos-Saratoga Road. James Samuels, a San Jose resident, has worked in the real estate field for the past 10 years, including five years with Kaufman and Broad. Magdalen B. Creighton, a resident of Los Gatos, spent seven years as vice president and co-owner of Creighton & Creighton Inc. She also founded a nonprofit center that provides training for cancer patients and families on how to mobilize their own resources in support of their treatment. Another Los Gatos resident, Paul Paolini, has joined Coldwell Banker's San Jose-Almaden office after working in the landscape design business.
