Investigators keep tabs on dam pressure

Jay Butler of Underwater Resources Inc. emerges from the bottom of the outlet pipe at Lexington Reservoir last week as several of his co-workers continued to crawl up inside the 52-inch-wide pipe on a mission to install pressure sensors and take hourly pressure readings on the pipe. Santa Clara Valley Water District officials are stumped as to why the giant pipe started buckling Aug. 30 but hope to have some answers in a month or two. Meanwhile, the district is working around the clock to conduct tests in cooperation with the Division of Safety of Dams, a state regulatory agency. The district is asking the public to stay away from the dam so as not to jeopardize the investigation.
