Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerQuilts? In September? With the crazy weather we had last week--including thunder and lightning and a chilly breeze--perhaps quilts aren't so outlandish. At any rate, Bets Ramsey, a historian, teacher and co-author of Southern Quilts: Surviving Relics of the Civil War, gives a free presentation Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at Forbes Mill Regional History Museum. She'll talk about old quilts' hidden clues that offer facts on family history and community lore. The Prowler, who normally thinks of quilts as cozy beds for catnaps, hears that analysis of quilt styles, patterns and sewing techniques can be very revealing. Those attending are welcome to bring their own quilts for discussion. Space is limited, so call 395-7375 for a reservation. Always a curious cat, the Prowler knows of another presentation coming up--this one geared toward seniors but open to anyone. On Sept. 30 at 2 p.m., longtime Los Gatan Jim Sugai speaks at the Los Gatos Meadows, located at 110 Wood Road. Sugai is a member of the California Native Plant Society and a former Los Gatos parks supervisor. Now in his 70s, he does volunteer maintenance at Saratoga's Hakone Gardens and helped restore the carousel in Los Gatos' Oak Meadow Park. He'll share how life after retirement is still full and rewarding. Call 354-0211 for reservations, which are a must. For those readers who find photography rewarding, check out the program night of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Camera Club on Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Gatos Presbyterian Church, located at 16575 Shannon Road. The evening includes members' photo essays and stories and photos from Club field trips. All shutterbugs are welcome.
