Substitute teaching opportunities

Anyone with a four-year college degree who has successfully passed the CBEST test is eligible to substitute-teach in one of the four elementary or one middle school in the Los Gatos Union School District. Benefits include day hours, opportunities for insurance, credit union membership and other opportunities through the substitute teachers' association. The next CBEST test will take place Oct. 16; the deadline to register is Sept. 20. For more information, call Peggy at the LGUSD office at 395-6610.

Tom Kirkendall takes Calvary position

Longtime Los Gatos resident Tom Kirkendall is now middle school director at Calvary Church of Los Gatos. Kirkendall returned to Los Gatos this year after spending a year in Africa, where he and his wife, Debbie, served as dorm parents at a mission school. He has directed Calvary's summer children's day camp and for the past 10 years has served on the high school volunteer staff.

Lakeside District needs to fill vacancy

The Board of Trustees of the Lakeside Joint School District, which serves Los Gatos residents in parts of the Santa Cruz mountains, has announced an opening to fill a vacant board seat. The district is looking to appoint someone interested in serving a four-year term of office, from Nov. 5, 1996 to November of 2000. Individuals must reside within the LJSD, be at least 18 years of age and be registered voters. Fisher study lab offers extra help

Fisher Middle School's Teaching and Tutoring program--better known as "TNT"--reopened Sept. 16. Located in the Library/Media Center, TNT is open Tuesday through Friday mornings from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and Monday through Thursday afternoons from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Under the direction of Jane Herberich and her staff, the program provides an environment for students to do homework, get help with homework, work on projects with other classmates, read, make up a test or use the Learning Arcade computers.

Leigh High grad earns scholarship

1996 Leigh High School graduate Rochelle Ouchi is one of 100 nationwide recipients of the Mervyn's/ Women's Sports Foundation Scholarships. The $1,000 scholarships recognize young women who are exemplary in athletic participation, academic performance and community service. Ouchi has received numerous honors for her soccer playing from local, state and national sports organizations. She earned a 3.9 GPA at Leigh. Ouchi is now attending UCLA and playing with the university's women's soccer team.

Art Docents seek volunteers

The Art Docents of Los Gatos, Inc. is holding a training session on Oct. 1 at 9:30 a.m. for anyone interested in this volunteer opportunity. This meeting includes an overview of the Art Docent program, which for more than 23 years has brought art appreciation and artistic technique enrichment classes to elementary and middle school students in the Los Gatos Union School District.
