Monte Sereno's City Council declared Sept. 3 that this week will be pollution-prevention week in the city.
They're joining Saratoga, Sunnyvale and other Santa Clara Valley cities between Sept. 16 and 22 in calling attention to local recycling and anti-pollution programs.
This is a good time for residents to sign up for recycling workshops and events around the county:
* Household hazardous waste dropoff--Sept. 28. Get rid of paint, batteries, garden chemicals and auto fluids, safely and legally. Call 299-7300 for an appointment.
* Compost workshops--Sept. 21. Learn how to turn food scraps or yard waste into supercharged plant food. For more information, call 299-4147.
* Cleaning shop of the future tour--Sept. 21. Visit a professional cleaning shop that uses water instead of dry cleaning chemicals to wash delicate garments. Cleaner 2000's computerized washers and dryers set water temperature and drying time just right for each fabric. To join the tour, call 299-7300.
* Coastal Cleanup Day--Sept. 21. Help protect the bay and the ocean by cleaning up local creeks, beaches and parks. To volunteer, call 730-7716.
* Alternative fuel station grand opening--Saratoga officials plan to unveil the pumping station that will fill their specialized fleet of cars and trucks with compressed natural gas. A CNG expert will attend. Guests can enjoy vintage cars and a barbecue lunch. For information, call Jennie Loft at 867-3438, ext. 221.
