    LG Foundation awards grants

The Los Gatos Community Foundation rolled out three grants and a new award at its annual Garden Party fundraiser on Sept. 16. The $100-a-head fundraiser is the foundation's biggest annual event.

A Place for Teens received a $3,000 grant, The Youth Science Institute was awarded $2,200, and Live Oak Nutritional Center left with a check for $800.

The foundation also announced its first ever "Thumbs Up Award." The award is to be presented on a year-to year basis when the foundation finds a Los Gatos citizen who went to extraordinary measures for public service.

This year's award recipient was Brian Hinman, a Los Gatos high-tech executive, who used $1.6 million of his own money earlier this year to save the Alma Fire Station from being sold off as home sites. Hinman will be presented with the award at the Foundation's board installation meeting in November.
