    The Prowler

September is certainly animal-friendly! This computer-savvy cat's favorite website for sending ecards, www.bluemountain.com, proclaims that Sept. 22 is Elephant Appreciation Day, Sept. 24 is International Rabbit Day and Sept. 24-30 is National Dog Week! And if that weren't enough, the Prowler also discovered this is National Chicken Month!

With that in mind, this cat hopes readers who are similarly animal-friendly will check out The Pet Network, a Saratoga-based nonprofit that offers temporary room and board for cats and dogs who are homeless or were given up by their humans for various reasons. Through pet fairs, word-of-mouth and their website (www.petnetwk.org), the Network finds compatible homes for as many furry friends as possible. All ages, breeds and personalities are available for adoption. The group can be reached at 408.450.2452.

For folks who prefer meeting animals in print rather than in person, Los Gatos' Images of Nature Gallery, at 5 N. Santa Cruz Ave., hosts a reception for its namesake--world-traveler, wildlife photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen--on Sept. 21, from 5 to 9 p.m. Mangelsen's photos appear in natural history museums worldwide, and he's been published in major magazines, including National Geographic.

Although not animal-related, another celebrity is also coming to town. Magdalen Hsu-Li, an artist with Chickpop Records, bills herself as a bisexual, Chinese-American singer-songwriter in the acoustic/pop/alternative genre. She performs Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. at Borders Books, Music & Cafe in Old Town. Drop on by; it's free!
