Wildcats power to football victory

LG cross-country team could be best ever

    Gatos frosh-sophers handle Leigh

    By Dick Sparrer

Scott Downs was a little worried about Leigh.

After all, the Longhorns had just taken apart Palo Alto 28-0 in their season opener, and they were set to visit Los Gatos on Friday night for the second game of the frosh-soph season.

But while the Gatos frosh-soph coach may have been worried, his players weren't. Or at least if they were, they certainly didn't show it on the football field.

Los Gatos ran up an impressive 381 yards of total offense on the way to a 28-12 victory over the Longhorns.

Charlie Clark led the Wildcats to their second win of the young season by carrying the football 19 times for 208 yards and three touchdowns.

Chris Willard supported with 15 carries for 84 yards and a TD, running behind an offensive line led by center Dan Holtzman, guard Evan McDonald and tackle Nick Crafford.

Clark gave the Cats the early lead with a 45-yard touchdown run in the first period, then helped Gatos go in leading 14-0 at the half with a 6-yard TD runs and a 2-point conversion run in the second quarter.

Willard went a yard for a touchdown in the third period and hauled in a two point pass from Steve Sweeney to make it 22-0 heading into the fourth.

Leigh scored early in the fourth, but Clark came back to tally his third TD on an 8-yard run. The Longhorns added a final touchdown inside the final minute of play.

Sweeney finished the night hitting on four-of-10 passes for 68 yards, going to Clark twice for 32 yards, Willard once for 20 and Pete Kiszka once for 16.

"For the second week in a row, our defense was really strong," said Downs.

Noseguard Kenny Heimer led the defensive charge with five tackles and a blocked PAT attempt. Defensive backs Matt Cooke (six tackles), Chris McMorrow (five) and Kiszka (four) were other leaders along with defensive ends James Furlo (three) and Stuart Gordon (one tackle, fumble recovery).

The coach also praised the work of linebackers Travis Howell and Eric Brown.

Los Gatos will try to make it three straight on Sept. 24 when the young Cats host Gunn at 5:15 p.m.
