Cancer Center seeks volunteers

In conjunction with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Northern California Cancer Center is now seeking Bay Area women who have survived breast cancer to take part in a new study designed to test whether a special diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in fats can reduce the risk of the cancer's recurrence. Many studies have suggested a correlation, and the NCCC wants to learn more about that relationship.

The study, called Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL), is funded by the National Cancer Institute and is open to women between the ages of 18 and 70 who were diagnosed with stage I, II or IIIA breast cancer within the past four years and are in good general health.

Women, if selected, will be randomly assigned to follow one of two healthy diets for a six-year period and will be required to report their eating habits periodically and complete scheduled telephone interviews and clinic visits. Participants also receive free dietary analyses, educational materials and cooking demonstrations.

Clinical activities take place at sites at Stanford University in Palo Alto, the University of California, San Francisco or at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. For more information, call WHEL study coordinator Judy Brodsky at 510/429-2580.
