The Prowler

Summer has ended, but that doesn't mean there's any shortage of fun, healthy and educational events here in Cat Town. Following close on the heels of the autumnal equinox, Skyland Community Church in the Santa Cruz Mountains holds its annual Harvest Festival on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Prowler hears the festival had its genesis in 1966, when local orchard owner Henry von der Mehden suggested an event to raise funds for a new fellowship center.

One of the features of this year's fest is a silent auction of gift baskets filled with many local goods and services. Other items for sale include white elephants, toys, books, clothing, antiques and homemade foods. There's face-painting and carnival games for kids and a barbecue lunch and live music for everyone. The church is still accepting items for sale. Call 353-1310 for directions or information.

Members of the younger set will also enjoy the ongoing children's programs at the Los Gatos Public Library. Back by popular demand for Sept. 28's family night at 7 p.m. is ventriloquist Steve Chaney and his feathered friend, Cornelius the Crow. Another celebration takes place Oct. 1 at 3:15 p.m., when kids are invited to celebrate the library's 100th birthday and enjoy some special treats.

Make no bones about it--a four-week conditioning program for adults begins Sept. 30 at the Community Hospital of Los Gatos' Physical Performance Institute. Registered nurse and exercise physiologist Anna Kuramoto will teach participants how to achieve better posture, strengthen bones and muscles and enhance coordination and flexibility. For more information, call 866-4098.
