Goat herd chows down

Some 353 hungry goats arrived in Los Gatos Sept. 16 to spend 10 to 14 days grazing down the overgrown brush, scrub and grasses around the Los Gatos Meadows, thereby lessening the danger in case of another fire. Meadows administrator Jim Hempler rented the goats from Davis-based Ecological Systems, whose firefighter and veterinarian co-owners make for a perfect combination of working knowledge. Several goatherds and dogs help keep the animals in line. The Meadows had to be evacuated during the Aug. 7 fire that destroyed three homes and threatened many more.
