Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerWhat do fish and horses have in common? Not a whole lot, save for the fact that the Prowler's finned and hoofed friends both take part in some upcoming Los Gatos events. On Sept. 27, Vasona Lake will teem with catfish (how dare they compare fish with felines!) for "South Bay Fishing in the City," a free program sponsored by the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department. From 8 a.m. to noon, kids can borrow rods and reels, pick up bait and go fish. The only catch is that each fisher must bring an adult with a driver's license to borrow equipment. Kids can also bring equipment from home. This cat prefers fishing with a swipe of the paw, but for kids, county personnel also offer a mini-clinic on knot-tying, line baiting, casting and fishing safety and ethics--things Ernest Hemingway never taught in The Old Man and the Sea. The only cost is a $4 per-car entry fee into Vasona County Park. Call 354-4902 for info. For those who prefer turf over surf, check out the Oct. 18 program at Icelandic Crest Horse Ranch. Located off Summit Road, the ranch hosts a Canadian expert on this tough, intelligent and gentle horse breed. Following the seminar and a break for lunch--provided by the ranch--attendees get riding lessons. Ten horses will even be available for purchase--definitely not an "impulse buy"! On Oct. 19, the ranch offers an all-day trail ride that takes participants to the sandy beaches of Santa Cruz. This cat hears that an upcoming issue of Sunset magazine contains a spread on Icelandic Crest, so after that these events may fill up fast! Call 353-8170 for costs and reservations.
