Gatos polo team looks pretty darn good again

By Dick Sparrer

Los Gatos put a pretty darn good polo team in the water last fall... good enough, in fact, that three Wildcats were recognized by the coaches who selected the all-Central Coast Section team.

But that was a year ago.

So how good will the Wildcats be when they return to the water for the 1996 season? Pretty darn good.

It seems that one of the three all-CCS players who helped make Gatos a winner last season will return for the Cats this fall, and head coach Matt Anderson thinks it should be more of the same in '96.

"We should have a strong season, like last year," Anderson said as he looked at the upcoming campaign.

And why wouldn't he think so? Many of the players who made Gatos a Central Coast Section title contender last year are back in the water this season.

Lance Campbell, an all-CCS first-team pick in '95, and John Etheridge, an all-CCS honorable mention pick, have each graduated and taken their talents off to West Valley Community College.

But another all-CCS honorable mention choice, James Rego, returns to head up a cast of seven talented returning lettermen.

Rego, a senior, won all-league first-team honors last season and went on to claim the all-CCS spot and a place on the All-American 10th-team.

Rego is one of three all-leaguers returning to the Gatos waters this fall. Seniors Chris Herr and Chris Park joined Rego on the 1995 all-league list, and they'll join him on the Gatos squad this season.

Seniors Marc Cavagnolo and Garrett Mills are two more solid returners for the Wildcats, along with goalies Peter Graff, a senior, and Peter Beritzhoff, a junior.

The veterans are joined by sophomores Taylor Henricks, Justin Skyba and Steve Westcott. Anderson considers the three to be bright young prospects.

Los Gatos, league champions in 1994, posted a solid 26-11 last year and finished second in the CCS Division I finals. Anderson is expecting the Wildcats to be contenders again this year.

The coach looks for Palo Alto, Cupertino and his own Wildcats to battle it out for the league championship, and he expects his Cats to contend with Bellarmine, Live Oak, Serra and Leland for the CCS championship.

Los Gatos will open the league season against Mountain View on Sept. 25, 6 p.m., at the West Valley College pool in Saratoga.
