Rachel Stratton pitches in eight goals in the win over Los Altos

Rachel Stratton poured in eight goals to lead the Los Gatos girls' water polo team to an impressive 18-8 victory over Los Altos in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play last week.

Stratton's performance helped the Wildcats even their league record at 1-1 and push their season mark to 4-3.

Amanda Harrington tossed in three goals for the Cats in the win, and Lisa Cristol and Alexandria Eastman added two goals apiece. Carol Humphrey and Lynsie Tanguay also scored for the Wildcats.

Volleyball

Leigh continued its winning ways in the pre-season with back-to-back wins over Valley Christian and Santa Teresa in girls' volleyball action.

The Longhorns edged Valley in five games 4-15, 15-12, 6-15, 15-9, 15-4 and whipped the Saints 15-7, 15-10, 15-5 to improve to 6-2 in nonleague play.

Field Hockey

Leigh broke open a 1-0 game with two second-half goals in a 3-0 nonleague win over Prospect last week. The Longhorns jumped to 2-0-1 for the year with the victory.

In other local action, Los Gatos dropped a 15-5, 16-14, 15-9 decision to powerful Sacred Heart Prep.

Tennis

Joanna Sickler won twice last week, but the Los Gatos girls' tennis team dropped a pair of matches to open the season in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Sickler nailed a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles, but the Wildcats lost 6-1 to Saratoga.

Sickler won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles a couple of days later, but the Cats dropped a tough 4-3 nod to Gunn. Leah Thomas nailed a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Robyn Levine won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The Wildcats slipped to 0-2 in league play and to 2-2 for the year with the two losses.

Leigh lost a pair of 6-1 decisions last week in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Longhorns lost to Presentation 6-1 decision at 6-3, 6-2 victory by Stephanie Smith at No. 1 singles, and they dropped a 6-1 nod to Leland later in the week.

The 'Horns are 1-3 in division play and 1-4 for the year.
