Six players score in f-s win
By Dick Sparrer
Six different players found their way to the end zone to lead the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team to a rousing 41-12 nonleague victory over Monta Vista last Friday night at Cupertino High.
The win came a week after the Wildcats had suffered a 31-8 loss to a junior varsity team from St. Francis.
Gatos improved to 2-1 for the year when Patrick McDonald, Umar Ellahie, Matt Martini, John Davidge, Danny Bates and Matt Miguel each scored touchdowns.
"Despite turning the ball over three times, we played some great football," said Los Gatos frosh-soph head coach Dale Gustafson. "We had a lot of long drives running and throwing the ball."
"One of the exciting things for me is that six different players scored touchdowns," he added. "I'm really proud of my team coming out and playing a solid game of football."
McDonald took a reverse 35 yards for a touchdown before Ellahie picked off a Monta Vista pass and rambled 35 yards for a score. It was Ellahie's second interception for a TD this season.
Martini scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kyle Jensen.
"[Jensen] played a great game at quarterback with an impressive last minute drive in the first half that put us up 21-0," Gustafson said. "He hit [Martini] with a 40-yard passing play with just 30 seconds to go in the half."
Davidge blasted over for a 2-yard TD run, Bates took off on a 52-yard touchdown run, and Miguel scored on a 2-yard run to round out the scoring for the Cats.
Along with Ellahie, defensive leaders in the win included Carlos Bravo, who forced a fumble; Mark Ericson and Omeed Ghaffarian, who were each in on quarterback sacks; and David Holtzman, who led the club in tackles from his free safety post.
A week earlier, McDonald ran for a touchdown, but that was the only score the young Cats could manage against St. Francis.
"St. Francis jumped on us early and we couldn't make up the difference," Gustafson said. "We made some mistakes early, which they capitalized on, and we fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter."
"We put together some drives but would break down when we got closer," he added.
