Anniversary
Celebrating 65 Years
Los Gatans Dr. Leslie "Les" and Gertrude Knott celebrated their 65th anniversary on Aug. 26, at the Los Gatos Meadows. They celebrated with friends and family, including daughters and sons-in-law Sylvia and Ken Gentili of Tacoma, Wash., and Roxanne and Leonard Nelson of Rehoboth Beach, Del. The Knotts also have a son, Leslie Jr.
As part of the festivities, Les presented each of the couple's 10 great-grandchildren with a copy of A Biography of the Twentieth Century, which chronicles the story of Les' and part of Gertrude's life.
The Knotts' actual marriage took place Sept. 3, 1935, at the Wilshire Boulevard Methodist Church in Los Angeles.
Les received his medical degree from the USC School of Medicine and worked in many different jobs during his life. Among those are running a private practice, serving as medical director of physical medicine at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, serving on the faculty of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University and serving as chief of the Division of Chronic Diseases with the U.S. Public Health Service. He has earned several awards and commendations for his work in human relations, including ones from Santa Clara County and Sons in Retirement.
Gertrude is a graduate of Occidental and YMCA College. She worked as a kindergarten teacher and as a special education teacher, volunteered as a board member and treasurer of the Women's Auxiliary of the Santa Clara County Medical Society, served six years as the Los Gatos representative to the Council on Aging, earned an award from the Los Gatos-Saratoga chapter of the American Association of University Women and earned the Female Volunteer Award from the Junior League for her work on behalf of mentally and physically challenged individuals.
Both Les and Gertrude, joined by friends Shirley and Chuck Schmidt, initiated the Alternative Christmas Fair at the Los Gatos United Methodist Church, which raised $6,000 in donations for charitable organizations. Both are also active in various committees at the Los Gatos Meadows.
