Evensong services, concerts return to St. Luke's Church
First guest a soprano
St. Luke's Episcopal Church, at 20 University Ave., is beginning its third year of evensong services and concerts. Evensong is a musical rendition of the evening prayer service and includes singing of hymns, psalms, canticles and prayers. It can also include a short sermon, depending on the season and officiating priest. Following the approximately 25-minute service is the featured concert, which lasts another half hour.
Evensong events are held on the first Sunday of each month, from October through May, beginning at 4 p.m. The first evensong is Oct. 1, and features familiar arias and sacred solos by soprano Thelma Johannesen, a Bay Area native now living in San Diego. She has performed theatrically with the Berkeley Opera Theater and the San Diego Opera. She has also sung with several church and choral groups in California and currently is a soloist for St. Mark's United Methodist Church and the Master Works Chorale in the San Diego area.
Other scheduled performers for the evensong series include sacred jazz pianist Dan Damon; the California Camerata; St. Luke's own organist/choirmaster Richard Coulter, joined by organist Larry Marietta; English horn player Brad Osness; trombonist Tony Collins; and pianist Andrew Todd.
Everyone is welcome at evensong. There is no charge for the concerts but a freewill offering will be accepted. For more information, call 408.354.2195.
