Gatos Pop Warner teams won't 'let the dogs out'

    By Dick Sparrer

Shut outs were the story of the day for the Los Gatos Pop Warner football teams when they battled Santa Teresa on Sept. 17.

Three Gatos teams refused to "let the dogs out," dominating the Santa Teresa Bulldogs in three different divisions.

The Tigers rolled over the Bulldogs 20-0 in the junior pee-wee division, the Cougars blanked Santa Teresa 10-0 and the Panthers whitewashed the 'Dogs 18-0.

The defense sparked the Tigers to their third straight win of the season.

Nick Scudellari headed up a pack of Gatos tacklers to drop the Santa Teresa quarterback in the end zone for a first-quarter safety, and Paul Politi blocked a punt that Jake Vilaubi recovered for a touchdown to put the Tigers up 8-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Gatos offense went to work. Long runs by Ryan Van Amburg, Sam Scudellari and Kevin Kephart set up fullback Robbie Comeau for a touchdown.

Dane Shaw slapped away a pass headed for a Santa Teresa receiver, forcing the Tigers to punt the ball away. This time it was Scott Day and Robbie La Bouff combining for the block.

Van Amburg raced 35 yards for a touchdown to make it 20-0, and a couple of key tackles by Day helped stop the 'Dogs cold to clinch the win.

Alex Estrada, Christian Walker and Sean Goodison were other key contributors for the Tigers.

    Cougars win 10-0

The Cougars started out much like the Tigers, with the defense scoring first in their 10-0 win.

A quarterback sack by Justin Foard forced the Bulldogs to punt from their own end zone. Foard and Nick Harris combined to sack the punter for a safety.

Quarterback Richie Scudellari scrambled 38 yards for a touchdown in the third period, then kicked the 2-point conversion to help clinch the win for the Cougars.

Stefan Fowler was the top tackler for the winners.

    Panthers roll 18-0

The Panthers improved to 3-0 with their 18-0 win over the Bulldogs.

Jake Schonig romped for three touchdowns on runs of 17, 29 and 16 yards to lead the Panthers to the victory.

Schonig was the team's top tackler and Chris Evan and Spencer Lopes each came through with interceptions as the Panthers claimed their second shut out of the season. Defensive ends Daniel Silva, Eric Omanoff and David Martini starred as the Panthers held the Bulldogs to less than 100 yards of total offense.

Nick Della Rocchetta was the top passer in the win and Kelly Peterson was the leading receiver.
