The Prowler
Although Los Gatos usually draws music fans into town for events like Music in the Plaza, two locals have turned the tables and are taking it out of town. On Oct. 3, Judy Bingman and Bob Blumenthal appear with the San Jose Wind Symphony for Strike Up the Band, opener of the symphony's 42nd season.
Set at 7:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, the concert features guest conductor Dr. Janet Averett of San Jose State University. The bill of fare is wind music from 1899 to 1999, including marches, novelties and classical pieces. Bingman, an alto saxophone player, is the former director of the Los Gatos High School Wildcat Marching Band. Blumenthal, a retired IBM worker, plays the clarinet. For tickets, call 650.903.6000.
Speaking of LGHS, the Los Gatos Girls' Field Hockey Team hosts its annual steak dinner fundraiser on Oct. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the patio adjacent to the small gym. Always one to scout out good deals on meals, the Prowler was surprised at how much eats come with each $12 ticket: teriyaki steak, tossed salad, beans, coffee, soda and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Tickets are available from field hockey players or by calling Fran at 408.395.4592 or Barbara at 408.358.9785. Proceeds go toward field maintenance and the purchase of player equipment.
Also on campus is the latest six-week session of Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens, which begins on Oct. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at A Place for Teens, also called The Outhouse. STEP classes offer a broad spectrum of interpersonal communication skills for anyone with a teenager. Caralee Weich has more info at 356.1414 ext. 632.
