By Dick Sparrer

The league season didn't start out too well for the Los Gatos girls' tennis team. But the Wildcats made up for that slow start with a pair of victories last week.

The Cats lost twice in the first week of the league season, but they evened their record at 2-2 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with two victories last week.

The Wildcats blanked Monta Vista 7-0, then whipped Lynbrook 6-1. Gatos is now 4-2 overall for the year.

Leah Thomas, Maren Lassner, Robyn Levine and Tina Chang each won twice in singles play to lead the Wildcats to the back-to-back league victories.

Thomas won by default at No. 1 singles to start the Cats on the win over the Matadors. Lassner posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, Levine won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, and Chang won 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

In the win over Lynbrook, Thomas nailed a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1, Lassner won 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 2, Levine won 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 and Chang won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.

The doubles team of Kristin Maibaum and Joanna Sickler also won twice in the two victories. Maibaum and Sickler nailed a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against the Matadors and they teamed for a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles against the Vikings.

Leigh, meanwhile, dropped a 5-2 decision to Mt. Pleasant in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, despite a 6-0, 6-2 win by Stephanie Smith at No. 1 singles.

Girls' Volleyball

Both the Los Gatos and Leigh girls' volleyball teams opened league play with victories last week.

The Wildcats handled Lynbrook 15-12, 15-5, 15-5 to start the season in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Cats are 5-2 overall this fall.

The Longhorns whipped Piedmont 16-15, 15-13, 15-4 to start the season with a win in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The 'Horns improved to 7-2 with the win, then went on to play in the San Jose Classic at San José City College over the weekend. Leigh made it to the finals of the Bronze Division before losing 15-11, 15-5 to Monte Vista Christian.
