Peterson leads Cougars to Pop Warner victory

    By Dick Sparrer

Kelly Peterson ran for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Cougars of the Los Gatos Pop Warner Football organization to a 14-0 win over Santa Cruz.

At the time, the win leveled the Cougars' record at 1-1 in Pop Warner play, but since that time they have dropped two decisions in the junior midget division to slip to 1-3 for the year.

The Cougars lost 12-7 to Mountain View to open the season, then fought back with the 14-0 win over Santa Cruz. The locals have since fallen 20-0 to Gilroy and 16-6 to Cambrian.

Peterson's big day led the Cougars to their only win of the year thus far. The young back carried 11 times for his team-high 90 yards.

Nick Kalpin supported with 27 yards on four attempts, and he had one long run called back on a penalty.

Will Kapp, Kyle Blair and Jake Viramontez were the top tacklers in the win and Bobby Enquist, Kalpin and Viramontez each intercepted Santa Cruz passes. Enquist returned his interception 50 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty nullified the score.

The Cougars lost a 12-7 decision to Mountain View in their season opener. Peterson ran back the second-half kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown, but that was the only score the Cougars could manage.

Peterson was the leading ground gainer for the Cougars, and he was also the club's top tackler. Kellan Barker, Riley Katolin and Jeff DeBarr were other defensive leaders.

Nick DellaRocchetta was the top passer in the game, and Brett Kundtz was the leading receiver.

Will Kapp had a big day, but the Cougars lost 20-0 to the Gilroy Browns. Kapp was in on 10 tackles to lead the club defensively, and he recovered a fumble. He led the Cougars offensively as the top ground gainer and receiver. He made a "circus catch" for a 30-yard gain, hauling in a pass from DellaRocchetta.

Peterson was in on eight tackles in the game, and Dustin Wynne got in on seven.

The Cougars slipped to 1-3 after a tough 16-6 loss to the Cambrian Valley Longhorns.

Peterson scored on a 6-yard run for the Cougars' only TD of the day. He ended up as the club's top ground gainer with DellaRocchetta the top passer and Kapp the leading receiver.

Peterson was the leading tackler in the game with Wynne and Barker other defensive leaders.

DellaRocchetta and Viramontez each intercepted passes, and Barker recovered a fumble that was forced by Kalpin. Kalpin also recovered an onside kick.

    Wildcats

Stefan Fowler ran in from the five for a touchdown and Richie Scudellari kicked a 2-point conversion to give the Wildcats an 8-7 lead over East County, but the joy was short-lived as the locals lost a 27-8 decision in the midget division.

Fowler led the ground attack for the Wildcats and was also the club's top tackler.

Scudellari was the top passer, and Thomas Watkins was the leading receiver. The two hooked up on a big fourth-down pass late in the game and backs Chad Bannan and Cameron Compton ran for first downs on key fourth-down plays, but the Wildcat could manage just the one touchdown.

The loss evened the Wildcats' record at 2-2.

    Bearcats

In the non-scoring mighty mite division, the offense came together for the Bearcats in a clash with Gilroy. The Bearcats scored three touchdowns in the game.

Eric Reichwein was the leading ground gainer and also the leading receiver for the Cats, and quarterback Brian Scott was the top passer.

Reichwein was also the tackling leader for the little Cats.

It was the defense coming to life in action against Menlo-Atherton a week later.

Matthew Marcus was the tackling leader for the Bearcats, and Reichwein was a defensive standout. Defensive lineman Trevor Ross and defensive end Sohn Nijor also played well.
