Down with the nattering nabobs of negativism

Ms. Dorothea Bamford's recent letter to your paper criticizing the valiant effort by Erin Gardner to start the Monte Sereno Monthly left me frustrated. We need no more "Nattering Nabobs of Negativism"--albeit not the press in this case--but some constructive creative inputs to improve our town. So what's wrong with a town picnic or a 10K race?

Los Gatos does it on a larger scale so are all their citizens "delusional" like Erin? I think not! If you want to focus your efforts on something constructive come walk down Poppy Lane some weekday morning and watch the children weave their way around the speeding SUV's as they go to Daves Avenue School.

Focus your energies with Erin on improving the safety of our children. We need some constructive creativity and energy on our council, and lets stop with the Anti-Gambordian-like tirades.

    Paul Dubois is best candidate

There are four candidates running for the Los Gatos Town Council, all of them honorable people. However, I feel that one of these stands out as the one who will serve our community best. That person is Paul Dubois.

Paul and his wife have dedicated countless hours to community service. Paul is a leader that gets things done. Both he and his wife have been presidents of Kiwanis clubs, clubs that are dedicated to community service with emphasis on helping children. Paul has also been the South Bay Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor where his leadership over 17 clubs resulted in enormous benefits to kids all over the South Bay.

As a fellow Kiwanian, I salute Paul for his leadership in Kiwanis and other community programs in Los Gatos.

Paul and his wife, Mary, own and operate their own business in Los Gatos. He knows the value of time. He knows the importance of efficiency. He respects other people's time and opinions. His leadership is needed at the town council to improve the efficiency of our government. If you have ever suffered through planning committee or town council meetings, you know what I mean when I say his leadership is needed to improve the efficiency of the governmental process in Los Gatos.

Sluggish governmental process and interminable delays in getting solutions saps the vitality of our community. Paul will reinvigorate the process.

Paul has a website that provides details on his positions and his objectives for the town. The website is at Dubois4council.org. Take a look and I am confident that you will join me in electing Paul Dubois to the Los Gatos Town Council.

Sobrato project should include some housing

On behalf of the League of Women Voters I wish to commend Dale Bryant, Los Gatos Weekly -Times editor, for her thoughtful editorial of Sept 20, questioning the Sobrato research park proposal.

At a recent LWV meeting, leagues from all over the nine Bay Area counties told of their concerns. We are all choking on commuter traffic between and outside our nine counties. Why?

We're experiencing road rage because of our region's housing shortage and soaring costs, the high-tech job opportunities available, and the lack of public transit alternatives.

After years of study the League asks local government to change regulations to increase the amount of housing available for moderate and low income residents. Some ways to do this are to place housing near transit corridors, jobs and services, build mixed-use housing, preserve existing housing, or give incentives to develop affordable housing as Los Gatos has done in the past.

With limited town land on which to build, perhaps some compromise could be arranged that permitted higher density housing and industrial development to be together on the site.

    Thanks to the Bloom-A-Thon volunteers

The Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make the "Bloom-A-Thon" successful:

Beautification volunteers, Shir Hadash, Cub Scouts Pack 335, Girl Scouts Troop 600, The Lions Club, Club Live, Town of Los Gatos-Parks and Public Works, and County Fire Departments. Thanks to the Los Gatos Weekly-Times for publicizing the event!

A special thanks to Bruce Preville who produced the idea of a "Bloom-A- Thon", to Green Thumb Nursery for wholesale bulbs, and to John Iaquino, our town Parks and Public Works director, for the many volunteer hours he gave.

Two thousand tulips will bloom in the springtime--be watching.

LGHS pool needs to be replaced

After attending Los Gatos High School back-to-school-night last week, I was appalled at the condition of its 40-plus-year-old pool. It is my understanding that in order to build a new pool that would be able to house the high school water polo teams, the swimming teams and a diving team, the community needs to raise approximately $700,000.

A new pool, when built, would also be able to accommodate senior citizen and young children alike, who could use the pool for a variety of swim classes.

Watching the young Olympic swimmers and divers last week, like Misty Hyman and Laura Wilkinson, was an inspiration to all young people.

Please consider a generous donation to help build a new pool. To learn more about the pool visit: www.lghs.net/thepool, or call 408.799.3168.

    New ideas for naming streets

Like most Americans who believe in truth in advertising. May I suggest that we rename our downtown streets to correspond in reality with their functions.

    Agreed?

OK. So let's change Main Street to Dump Truck Drive. Let's change University Avenue to Industrial Way. And let's change Santa Cruz Avenue to Idle-A-While.

    Any objections?

    Keep newsletter in Monte Sereno

Erin Gardner's Monte Sereno Monthly was well received in our household and we would like it to continue whatever the outcome of the election.

Monte Sereno is a fabulous place to live and it's time that everyone besides real estate agents know where it is. It also has its own set of problems that require unique solutions.

Keep up the good work and good luck in your run for the city council, your city goals for 2000 were right on!
