    Forrest and Elsa Crumpley

For 57 years, the Los Gatos couple has woven a life of social activism

Forrest and Elsa Crumpley have been doing things out of the ordinary for the 57 years they've been married. The Crumpleys are political and social activists who are committed for the long haul. In an article in the April 19, 1999, issue of The New Yorker, journalist Calvin Trillin reported on Elsa's crusade, along with three other women, to free Paris Carriger--whom they believed was innocent--from death row. When Trillin appears to label Elsa and Forrest as do-gooders, she sets him straight, and he quotes her: "We're not do-gooders. We're lefties."   More
