'A Taste of the Greenbelt'

Autumn Kitchen Tour

    The Prowler

From worms to wildlife, this week's column is all about animals!

Every month seems to be the designated month to recognize various causes, and October is no different. According to the Prowler's friends at the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley, we have now entered Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. The Society wants to get the word out about its dozens of homeless puppies and dogs in many sizes and breeds. All have been health-checked. "We certainly have a lot of cuties waiting for new homes to call their own!" says the Society's Leslie Baikie with her usual ebullience. October adopters also receive a free bag of dog snacks. Call 408.727.3383 for more info or directions to the Santa Clara shelter.

Ever heard of vermiculture? It sounds strange, but it's really just composting with the help of friendly earthworms. This and other methods of reducing, reusing and recycling food scraps and yard waste will be explained on Oct. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. during a free composting workshop at the Los Gatos Neighborhood Center, 208 E. Main St. The class is a joint project of the county's home composting education program and the Town. Please register by calling 408.299.4147.

Fans of more "wild" animals won't want to miss a reception for wildlife photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen on Oct. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at his Images of Nature Gallery, 5 N. Santa Cruz Ave. The event, which is free and open to the public, includes some of Mangelsen's newest limited-edition prints as well as hand-signed photographs. Alaska, Canada, the western U.S. and Africa are among the locales to which Mangelsen travels.
