A weekend that started with two ties ended with a rather impressive shutout victory and tournament championship for the Los Gatos Mavericks, an under-14 boys' Class III team from Los Gatos United Soccer.

The Mavericks blanked the Santa Rosa Pythons 2-0 in the championship game to win the title in the Redwood Allliance Invitational in Belmont.

Mike Ross knocked in a corner kick and Patrick Lynch also scored a goal to lead the Mavericks to the win in the title game.

Alex Rollin was flawless in the goal, shutting out the Pythons, and Jon Branch, Hans Jorgensen and Edward Cheung were other defensive stars.

The Mavs had opened the tourney with a 1-1 tie against the BUSC Panthers, Matt Morales scoring the lone goal for the locals, and they came back with a 2-2 tie against the Fremont Clash, Tyler Doyle and Lynch each scoring goals for Gatos.

But the Mavericks battled back to crush the Central Strikers 7-2. Morales and Doyle buried three goals apiece in the win, and Aaron Goldfarb added one.

The win pushed the Mavs into the finals against Santa Rosa. Alex Kehriotis, Brian Stanton and Jonathan O'Keefe also played key roles in the victories.

Barracudas win title

The De Anza Barracudas, a CYSA under-14 girls' soccer team, won the championship at the Blossom Valley Tom Radesic Memorial Tournament held Sept. 5-6 in Morgan Hill. The Barracudas finished first in the 12-team bracket, allowing just two goals in four games.

Team members include Samantha Bell, Amanda Brandt, Meredith Chabrier, Katie Gazley, Ashley Louderback, Amanda Perez, Ilana Sabes and Nikki Snyder of Saratoga; Kelly Gault of Monte Sereno; Chantel McNulty of Cupertino; Maria McNulty of Los Gatos; and Melanie Miller, Gina Novali, Tiffany Scheibley and Michiko Shimakage of San Jose. The coach are Lee Gazley and Herb Brandt.

Tigers finish third

The Los Gatos Tigers, a boys' under-10 competitive team, finished third at the Blossom Valley Tom Radesic Memorial Tournament. Earlier in the season, the Tigers had finished second at the seventh annual Novato Classic III Tournament.

The Tigers, one of two boys' under-10 comp teams from Los Gatos United, has allowed less than a goal a game through the eight games of the two tournaments.
