The Prowler

John Keats had it right when he wrote that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. Yes, there is a point to the Prowler waxing poetic--it has to do with Los Gatos' valuable nonprofit organization, the Art Docents.

On Oct. 28, Macy's annual Benefit Shopping Day becomes a fundraiser for the group via the $10 tickets shoppers can buy to save 10 to 15 percent on purchases. Ticket sales benefit the Art Docents, whose volunteers bring artwork and age-appropriate programs into school classrooms. Call 358-1071 or 265-3618 for details.

Tickets are also on sale for the fourth annual Haunted Forest. This chilling event in Oak Meadow and Vasona parks offers families safe, supervised fun for Halloween. It's also a fundraiser for good causes: the nonprofit Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad and various aspects of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, including Volunteers in Policing, the Disaster Aid Response Team, reserve officers, and community and crime-prevention programs.

This Halloween-loving black cat hears this year's Forest includes the Phantom Express train ride, Spooky Hollow area for kids, an interactive walking tour, carnival games, live entertainment and hot food. For dates, times and ticket prices, call 354-6842.

Finally, for those who'd like to acquire art on a Lilliputian scale, check out the Miniature Art Auction on Oct. 10 at the Palo Alto Cultural Center. No piece of art, be it a painting, photograph or sculpture, is more than 8 by 8 by 8 inches. That's almost as tiny and cute as a baby kitten! Los Gatos' own Rick Tharp, owner of Tharp Did It!, is one of the exhibitors. For more info, call 650/321-4196.
