Police make arrest in pipe bomb case

By Shari Kaplan

Following a month-long investigation of an unexploded pipe bomb at a Cherrystone Drive home, Los Gatos police detectives Sept. 27 arrested Shawn Ray Knutson of San Jose.

Knutson was charged with terrorist threats and wrongful possession of a destructive device with intent to injure or intimidate.

The investigation began following an Aug. 23 call around 7:10 p.m. from a Cherrystone resident who discovered an unexploded, 10-inch-long pipe bomb while working in his yard. Los Gatos police took a report and summoned the San Jose Police Department's bomb squad, which safely removed the device that evening.

According to LGPD Sgt. Tricia Friedrich, the resident told police he hadn't been in that area of his yard for about two weeks, so he didn't know when the bomb actually arrived. While conducting the investigation, which included further conversations with the resident, police learned the resident believed Knutson was angry over a business deal that did not work out.

Knutson, 25, was released from the county jail after posting $50,000 bail. The case is being reviewed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office. Knutson is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Municipal Court on Oct. 11, according to a court representative.
