Los Gatos water polo player Katie Penkoff looks for someone to pass to in action against St. Francis.

The waters proved to be rather unstable for the Los Gatos girls' water polo team in a pair of Santa Clara Valley Athletic League games last week.
They were calm enough for the Wildcats early in the week against Saratoga, but it was a regular small craft warning day later in the week when the Cats battled St. Francis.
It was smoothing sailing for Gatos in a 16-10 win over Saratoga to open the week. But the water got a little choppy against the Lancers.
Rachel Stratton fired in eight goals and Joy Patterson, Ashley Eastman and Lisa Cristol added two each in the win over Saratoga.
But Gatos slipped to 3-2 in league play and to 9-4 for the year after a 20-14 decision to powerful St. Francis.
Stratton and Amanda Harrington tossed in four goals apiece to lead all Gatos scorers. Lynsie Tanguay popped three goals for the Wildcats and Eastman hit two. Cristol and Lisa Greenfield each added a goal.
Girls' volleyball
Julie Yick earned all-tournament team honors when the Los Gatos girls' volleyball team made to the semifinals of the Mitty Tournament last weekend.
The Cats beat Del Mar 15-10, 15-10 and took Aptos 15-13, 15-11, but lost to Sacred Heart Prep 15-7, 15-3 and St. Francis 15-12, 15-11 in tourney play.
The Wildcats had split in De Anza Division play earlier in the week. Gatos handled Mountain View 15-8, 15-1, 15-13, but lost 15-13, 15-6, 15-12 to Los Altos to slop to 2-1 in the league season.
Leigh dropped its only league match of the week, falling 5-15, 15-10, 15-2, 15-4 to Presentation. The Longhorns are 1-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
Girls' tennis
Maren Lassner and Robyn Levine each won in singles play, but the Los Gatos girls' tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Los Altos in the De Anza Division.
Lassner posted a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and Levine won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
But the only other win the Wildcats could manage on the day was a 6-2, 6-1 victory by Tina Chang and Kristin Maibaum at No. 3 doubles.
The Cats, who lost 7-0 to St. Francis to open the week, slipped to 2-4 in division play and to 4-4 for the year.
Leigh, meanwhile, pulled out a 6-1 win over Independence in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Stephanie Smith cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to start the Longhorns on the road to the victory.
Leigh is now 3-5 in division play and 3-6 for the season.
