Wildcats open league hockey season with two straight ties

    By Dick Sparrer

It's not exactly the way the Los Gatos girls field hockey team had hoped to start the league season.

Three games into the 2000 campaign, the Wildcats have yet to record a victory.

Still, it's not all bad for the Cats. After opening with a 3-1 loss to St. Francis, the Wildcats have battled area powerhouses Willow Glen and Mitty to ties to remain tight in the race in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Rachel Lichte drilled an unassisted goal in the second half to help the Wildcats pull out a 1-1 tie with the Rams last week.

Willow Glen had scored a first-half goal to lead 1-0 at intermission, and that's how it remained until Lichte's goal knotted the score.

It was just the opposite for Gatos later in the week against Mitty. Anita Reyes scored in the first half to give the Wildcats the early lead, but Mitty tied it with a goal in the second half, and the game ended 1-1.

Los Gatos pushed its record to 0-1-2 in league play with the two ties. The Cats are 5-1-2 for the year.

Leigh, meanwhile, lost its only decision last week, falling 2-0 to Monta Vista in a Santa Teresa Division game. The Longhorns slipped to 3-3-1 for the year with the loss in their first league game.

The Longhorns are led this fall by returning all-leaguers Stephanie Condon, Bianca Hernandez, Stephanie Pando and Danielle Wagster.

Varsity returners at Leigh include Kristin Davison, Melissa Hall, Jane Maurer, Jessica Pavlak, Calli Rickey, Kimberly Schlief and Eden Segev.

Former Leigh stars Karin and Kelli Mirassou have returned to coach the Longhorns this season. The two starred for Leigh from 1992-95 and played for Cal from 1996-99.

"We've played some higher division teams and played well," said Karin Mirassou. "We've noticed a lot of improvement in the first month, and we hope to finish in the top two in our division so we can go to CCS."

The Longhorns will get back to Santa Teresa Division business this week when they visit Leland on Oct. 10 and host St. Ignatius on Oct. 12 in a pair of 3 p.m. games.

    Wildcats fourth

The Los Gatos girls volleyball team knocked off St. Francis of Sacramento and Trinity Valley on the road to a fourth-place finish at the rugged Mitty Invitational volleyball tournament last week.

The Cats opened with a 15-12, 10-15, 15-12, 15-8 over SF of Sacramento, then whipped Trinity Valley 15-11, 15-8, 15-12 to advance to the tournament semifinals.

But the Cats lost 16-14, 15-6, 15-9 to St. Mary's of Stockton in the semi's, then fell to host Mitty 15-12, 11-15, 15-6, 15-12 in the third-place match.

Lauren Rinehart and Chanel Ohlund were Wildcats named to the all-tournament team in the event that featured the outstanding volleyball teams from throughout the state.

St. Francis of Mountain View beat St. Mary's in the championship match.

Earlier in the week, Gatos had dropped a 15-7, 15-6, 15-12 decision to rival St. Francis in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Wildcats came back to whip Cupertino 15-0, 15-3, 15-11 behind 11 kills by Rinehart.

Gatos is now 4-1 in division play and 14-7 for the year.

    Polo teams fall

The Los Gatos girls and boys water polo teams each lost games last week.

The Gatos girls dropped an 11-4 decision to Homestead to slips to 0-7 in El Camino Division play.

Becca Stein pitched in two goals and Adriana Anavitarte and Kacey Ballard tossed in one each in the loss to the Mustangs.

Gatos trailed just 6-3 at the half, but Homestead outscored the Wildcats 5-1 in the second half to roll up the victory.

The Los Gatos boys lost in the first round of the St. Francis Invitational, falling 12-6 to the host Lancers.

Mark Walleen and Kevin Robinson led the Gatos effort with two goals apiece.

The Cats, who posted a 9-5 win over Aragon in the tournament, fell behind early as the Lancers tossed in five unanswered goals in the first period.
