The Prowler
This week, the Prowler's flight of fancy is a column full of events that deal with things that fly.
First is the ninth annual Audubon Wildlife Education Day, a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society and open to all ages. Although it takes place at McClellan Ranch Park in Cupertino, that's a close enough car trip! It includes birdhouse-building, bird banding demos, live animals, bird-friendly gardening tips, a nature walk, a raffle and refreshments. Many Bay Area nonprofits dealing with animals and the environment will also be on hand with information about their causes. Call 408.252.3747, or visit www.scvas.org on the Internet to learn more.
Avian aficionados will also love the chance for a "face-to-beak" meeting with live birds during the Wild Bird Center's fifth anniversary celebration. On Oct. 15, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Belgatos Park, falconer Dana Spence and Sulphur Creek Nature Center guide Christine Blakely will introduce kids and adults to a red-tailed hawk, prairie falcon, turkey vulture, ring-necked dove and other feathered friends. Cost is $2 per person. The Wild Bird Center (in Kings Court Shopping Center) is also having an anniversary sale that day. 408.358.9453 is the number for info!
Finally, Los Gatos artist Dolly Cahill Johnson, known for her beautiful and fanciful fine art kites, is holding her 14th annual show and reception at Skysong Studios, her creative haven in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It runs Oct. 21-22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along with kites, her latest exhibitions include mixed media paintings as well. Call 408.354.1513 for directions.
