Local sprite appears in 'Midsummer' tale
By Mary Ann Cook
BUDDING BALLERINA: One of the sprites who will be treading on toe shoes and magic when the San Jose Cleveland Ballet presents A Midsummer Night's Dream on Oct. 14-17 is Los Gatan Rachel Care. Rachel, 10, is a student at Lakeside Elementary School and has been taking ballet lessons since she was 4.
She studies at the School of San Jose Cleveland Ballet and was chosen to be a member of the fairy band that figures in the Bard's play. Also chosen were Julia Havard and Brittain Melehan of Saratoga. Brittain is a student at St. Mary's in Los Gatos. All performances will be at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. The box office is 408.288.2800
Rachel is not only light on her toes, but mighty swift in her navigational ability. She recently won the U.S. Championship Orienteering title in her age group in the competition held at Lake Tahoe. This is a sport in which one finds the way out of a wilderness using only compass and map.
The sport is a fast-growing one. There are 600 people in the Bay Area club and Rachel's parents are active in it. They are Louise Madrid and Dennis Wildfogel. The next orienteering session is at Monte Bello Ridge on Oct. 24.
Call Wildfogel at 408.354.1686 to register.
MEMORIAL: Organizers of the Peckler Memorial Relay to be held Oct. 17 report that the route will be safer and simpler this year, beginning and ending at Los Gatos High School, with runners or walkers heading for Lexington or Vasona and back.
Those in the thick of things are Pam Dunnett, Reiko Iwanaga, Joanne Rodgers, Tina Kellogg and Mary Kay Breitenbach. Nancy Boesenberg is heading a relay team, as are local service clubs. The money raised goes to CASA, A Place for Teens and the Teen and Family Counseling Center.
EARTHQUAKE RELIEF: Yavneh Day School students raised $1,129, which money will be sent to the Turkish Earthquake Relief Fund. Day school students are in grades K-5 and made this decision after class discussion about the earthquake.
AMERICAN BEAUTY: One of the producers of American Beauty, the movie now showing at the Los Gatos Cinemas, is Dan Jinks, a 1981 Los Gatos grad. At the movie's San Francisco premiere, Jinks took his high school drama teacher, Karen Randall, as his special guest. It's a four-star movie with Oscar's shadow hovering over.
PAVING GOOD CITIZENSHIP: When the Los Gatos streets were repaved recently, the Los Gatos Elks Lodge got into the act by allowing the paving company, Pavex Construction and Painting, to store equipment, cars and trucks at the Elks' vacant lot so that the behemoths wouldn't have to be parked on residential streets.
In thanks, Bruce Woolpert, president of the paving company, gave a very generous donation to the Elks, reports Exalted Ruler Bill Quigley. It was a three-way win--for the town, for the Elks and for the company.
Supervisor of the job was Todd Garman, who left the lot in excellent condition, Quigley relates. The money went to the Elks National Foundation, the California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, which aids physically impaired students, and to local charities.
LONG TERM: Some seven town employees have chalked up 25 or more years of service. They are, in order of service, Robert Weber (since '71) and John Jennings ('72), police officers; Aldo Giordano ('72), maintenance supervisor; Patricia Garcia ('73), town manager secretary.
Others, all employed since '74, are Tony Harding, lead parks and maintenance worker; Lupe Rodriguez, equipment mechanic; and Elizabeth Ross, librarian.
COVER GIRL: Betty Carlson's daughter Tanya Carlson-Merryman appeared on the cover of the September-October issue of Oxygen , a fitness magazine. Carlson-Merryman is the ESPN Fitness America champion and hosted fitness events throughout the year all over the world. Betty Carlson is a travel agent with Travel Advisors of Los Gatos.
BOSTON BRASS: The Boston Brass kick off the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Concert series for 1999-2000 at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the LGHS Auditorium. The five musicians are adept vocally as well as instrumentally, so part of the concert will be close harmony, barbershop style.
