    All Creatures Great and Small

Kathleen Whalen, 7, cuddles her pet rat, Tickles, during a prayer service and animal blessing on Oct. 4 at St. Mary's School. Next to her, patiently waiting their turn, are Kathleen's classmate Zachary Hershberger, 6, and his rat, Alexander. Students were invited to bring their pets to school to have them blessed as part of a celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It's said St. Francis had such a way with animals that they became tame just being in his presence.
