The Prowler
This week's column is dedicated to two great community causes that the Prowler is proud to support.
The first is the third annual Peckler Memorial Relay, set for Oct. 17 with a 9 a.m. start time at the Los Gatos High School track. Sponsored by Community Against Substance Abuse, the relay is in memory of Jim, Jill and Jeff Peckler, who lost their lives in January 1997 after their car was struck by a drunken driver.
Proceeds of the relay, whose course has been modified to make for easier running and walking, benefit CASA and A Place for Teens--both of which the Pecklers were active in--as well as the Family Counseling Center of the West Valley. It's not too late to sign up! Call 408.867.2546 or 408.867.4525.
Another of the Prowler's pet events is the fifth annual Haunted Forest, which takes place Oct. 22-31 in Oak Meadow Park and Vasona Lake County Park. The ghoulish fun includes train rides through haunted outdoor scenes on the Phantom Express--a.k.a. the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad--the Spooky Hollow trick-or-treating area for kids, carnival games and prizes, carousel rides, a scary walking tour, snacks, barbecued food and a gift shop.
Not surprisingly, Halloween is this cat's favorite holiday, but that's not the only reason the Prowler likes this event. It's also a safe and fun way the whole family can stick together on Halloween and the preceding nights. Plus, the shindig is a fundraiser that benefits community organizations: the crime-prevention programs and three volunteer groups of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department; the non-profit Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad; and various service clubs. Call 408.354.6842 for tickets.
