The Prowler

While California is busy Oct. 18 remembering the "day after" the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the Prowler and much of Cat Town will be remembering the Peckler family during the second annual CASA/Peckler Memorial Relay.

Everyone in Los Gatos surely remembers that Los Gatan Jim Peckler and two of his four children, Jill and Jeff, were killed in January 1997 by a drunk driver in Truckee. In honor of their memories, the community organized the first relay a year ago, which proved a huge success. The Prowler suspects this year's event will have an even bigger turnout, thanks to more time, publicity and word-of-mouth.

In case there are some readers who haven't yet heard the news, here's the scoop: the relay begins at 8 a.m. at Douglas B. Miller Point on Lexington Reservoir and consists of a 15-mile course through the hills, trails and parks of Cat Town. There's eight different legs, ranging from 0.9 miles to 4.1 miles, so both occasional and seasoned runners will find something to their taste. Walkers are also welcome.

Individuals can choose portions of the relay at $25 per leg or run the whole course for $50. The cost for an organized team of up to eight runners is $200, with special team divisions available. Teams comprising youths in their teens and younger can participate for $10 per person.

Following the relay, there's food, drinks and entertainment for everyone at Los Gatos High School. Relay proceeds benefit Community Against Substance Abuse, A Place for Teens--both of which the Peckler kids were involved with--and the Teen Counseling Center of the West Valley.
