Los Gatos Weekly-TimesOlympic gold medalist hosts speed and quickness clinicOlympic gold medalist Andre Phillips and track coach Stan Dowell, who had coached two Olympic champions, will be featured guests at a speed and quickness clinic to be held Oct. 17, 9-11 a.m., at the Los Gatos High School track. The clinic will cover speed training for track and its application to football, basketball, baseball and all running sports. There will be demonstrations of training sessions, as well as coach and athlete motivational skills. Phillips will be featured at the clinic. The former Silver Creek and San Jose City College track and field star won an Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1988 Games. Phillips, who ran 47.19 to win his Olympic gold, is a former state high school champion in the 300-meter low hurdles. Dowell coached Phillips at Silver Creek, and he also coached Lee Evans, who won Olympic gold in the 400 meters (43.86) at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. Representatives from other individual sports will also participate in the clinic. The cost is $25 for adults, $15 for high school students and $10 for kids.
