Wildcats 'below average' in a field hockey victory

By Dick Sparrer

The offense played a bit below its average when the Los Gatos girls' field hockey team battled Mitty last weekend.

But you won't catch Gatos coach Henry Reyes complaining. Because the Wildcats weren't playing below average, just below their average!

Gatos is averaging 3.77 goals a game in the 1998 season, and the Cats scored just three goals in a 3-0 win over the Monarchs in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Of course, it didn't hurt that the Gatos defense played just a little above its average. The Cats have allowed just .33 goals a game this fall, but blanked Mitty to claim their second win of the league season.

Los Gatos had opened league play with a 4-0 win over Leigh earlier in the week. Junior Juli Fomenko knocked in two goals, and Kathryn Breed and freshman Anita Reyes belted in one apiece to lead the Cats to the victory. Erin Robinson came through with an assist on Breed's goal.

Gatos backed up that win with the 3-0 victory over Mitty later in the week. Robinson and Iming Lin set up Liz Pegram for a first-half goal to give the Cats a 1-0 lead, then Los Gatos scored twice in the second half to clinch the victory.

Robinson scored off a Courtney Radonich assist, and Robinson and Cortney Kelly assisted Juli Fomenko on the final goal.

The two wins helped the Wildcats improve to 8-0-1 for the year. The Cats will visit Lynbrook on Oct. 14 before hosting Leland on Oct. 16 in a pair of 3 p.m. games.

Water polo

Rachel Stratton popped four goals, and Alix Eastman, Lisa Cristol, and Carol Humphrey added two each, but the Los Gatos girls' water polo team dropped a 16-10 decision to Palo Alto last week. The loss left the Wildcats 4-8 for the year and 0-2 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

The Los Gatos boys' team lost a 12-5 nod to unbeaten Palo Alto in De Anza Division play last week. Nic Van Biene scored two goals to lead the Cats, who slipped to 2-1 in the division with the loss.

Netters fall

The Los Gatos girls' tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to unbeaten Los Altos in De Anza Division play last week.

Volleyball split

The Los Gatos girls' volleyball team opened play last week with a spirited 15-2, 15-5, 15-4 win over Monta Vista, but the Wildcats lost 15-9, 15-10, 15-11 to Los Altos later in the week.

The Cats, led by senior star Amy Grabill, are now 4-1 in the De Anza Division and 15-5 for the year.
