Holocaust memorial dedicated

The Jewish Community Center is holding a public dedication ceremony for its Holocaust Memorial Wall Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. in the JCC's central courtyard.

The memorial wall, made of Jerusalem stone donated by Holocaust survivor Jack Tramiel and his family, stands approximately 12 feet by 12 feet. Palo Alto architect Stan Field, whose father's family died in the Holocaust, designed the wall to resemble the dome of Rachel's Tomb near Jerusalem as well as the Western Wall, considered the last remnant of the Second Temple.

An inscribed four-by-six-foot bronze plaque on the wall includes the design of a hand with numbers tattooed on it, representative of the serial numbers Nazis tattooed on concentration camp prisoners. The numbers belong to Richard Hirsch, an active supporter of the memorial project, who died in July.

The memorial's creation and installation represent the donations and efforts of many people and entities, including the South Bay Holocaust Group, the JCC and the Jewish Federation. Tramiel, along with Ken Levy of KLA Associates, donated the remainder.

The JCC is located at 14855 Oka Road in Los Gatos. For information, call 356-3636.
