Chester Johnson

Los Gatos resident Chester "Chet" Johnson died Sept. 27 at the age of 78.

Born Jan. 22, 1918, in San Jose, Johnson married his Santa Clara High School sweetheart, Mary Ellen Slavens, in 1938. During World War II, he served in the SeaBees, a construction battalion of the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy.

Along with business partner Wesley Hubbard, Johnson began the Hubbard & Johnson Lumber Co. in the mid-1940s; their yard was located where the Toll House Hotel stands today. The company's signature orange-and-green trucks supplied lumber to build thousands of Bay Area homes for several decades. Over the years, the company expanded to include Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and the 25-acre headquarters yard in Redwood City.

Johnson was active in many aspects of the Masonic Order. He also was a fan of training and hunting with Labrador retrievers.

Survivors include wife Mary Ellen Johnson of Los Gatos; daughter Judy McCullough of Aptos; son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Eva Johnson of San Jose; and grandchildren Kellie Birkhofer of Aptos, Debbie Heesch of Los Angeles and Greg Heesch of San Jose.

At Johnson's request, no services were held. Donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco, 94122.

H. Edward Goulart

H. Edward Goulart died Sept. 17 at his Los Gatos home following an illness. He was 86.

Goulart was born Nov. 26, 1909, on Faial Island in the Azores. His family settled in the South Bay when he was a youth, at which time he worked in local canneries and later as a caddy and assistant golf professional at the San Jose Country Club.

Following a few other businesses ventures, Goulart became manager of Tony Visich's grocery on N. Santa Cruz Avenue. In 1944, he bought the store and renamed it Eddie's Northside Market. It offered top cuts of meat, fresh produce and a deli, as well as standard groceries and sundries. He owned the market for some 30 years, with his wife working as bookkeeper.

Goulart also involved himself with much of the Los Gatos community. He served as president of both the Los Gatos Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge 1857, a charter member of La Rinconada Country Club and an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Saratoga Men's Club.

Goulart's wife of nearly 60 years, Marie, died in 1991. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Edward H. and Darklis Anne Goulart of Los Gatos; grandsons Gregory and Todd Goulart; great-grandchildren Timothy, Tabitha and Deborah; and brothers Everett and Manny Goulart.

Services have been held, with entombment at Los Gatos Memorial Park. Donations may be made to the Timpany Center, 730 Empey Way, San Jose, 95128.
