Eastman pops six goals to lead Cats to win
By Dick Sparrer
Junior sensation Catherine Eastman pitched in six goals to lead the Los Gatos girls water polo team to an impressive 12-5 win over Wilcox last week in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Eastman's performance sparked the Wildcats to their seventh win in eight tries in division play.
Rachel Jeffers and Becca Norman supported with two goals apiece in the Gatos win, and Becca Stein and Heather McMurray added a goal each.
The Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Wilcox matched Los Gatos' three goals in the second period to trail just 5-3 at the half. Gatos outscored the Chargers 4-2 in the third and 3-0 in the fourth, though, to pull away.
In non-league play last week, the Cats lost a tight 6-3 nod to Willow Glen despite getting two goals from Eastman and one from Stein.
Eastman tops a junior-heavy lineup for Los Gatos this fall. Adriana Anavitarte and Monica Young are the only seniors on the Gatos roster that includes eight juniors--Eastman, Jeffers, Norman, Stein, McMurray, Agata Kosmalska, Amy Niswonger and Kristen Gonzales.
Goalie Anna Hygelund is one of three sophomores on the squad. She's joined by classmates Megan Fredrickson and Brittany Shand.
The Wildcats will be on the road this week to visit Los Altos on Oct. 16, 5:30 p.m., and Cupertino on Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Wildcats split
The girls field hockey at Los Gatos split a pair of 1-0 decisions in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week.
Alison Reyes scored a first-half goal off an Ashley Ogle assist to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over Lynbrook, but the Cats lost 1-0 to Mitty later in the week to slip to 3-1 in the division and to 8-1 for the year.
Los Gatos will try to get back on the winning track with two home games this week. The Cats host Willow Glen on Oct. 16 and Saratoga on Oct. 18, both 3 p.m. starts.
Cats ace Mats
The Los Gatos girls volleyball team pulled out a 15-7, 14-16, 15-3, 15-3 win over Monta Vista last week in De Anza Division play. The Cats are now 3-4 in the division and 8-9 for the year.
