    Gatos f-s rolls past Wilcox

    By Dick Sparrer

It's tough for a football to come back after trailing 24-7 at the half. But that's just what the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team did last Friday night, coming from behind to pull out a thrilling 28-24 victory over Wilcox.

The win helped the young Wildcats improve to 3-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 5-1 for the year.

Danny Bates ran 60 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, but the Chargers opened up a 24-7 lead by intermission in last Friday's game.

But Bates ran back the second-half kick off 82 yards for a touchdown to start the Cats on the road to the comeback.

"Danny Bates took this team on his shoulders with an outstanding game on offense, defense and special teams," said LG coach Dale Gustafson.

A 20-yard run by Kyle Jensen on a quarterback sneak set up a 15-yard TD run by wide receiver Patrick McDonald on a reverse, and Bates blasted over on a 1-yard run for his third touchdown of the night to complete the comeback.

"I am extremely proud of this team," added Gustafson. "It is very difficult to come back against anyone like that. We believed in ourselves, and when we eliminate the mistakes we can play some great football."

Bates led the ground attack with 164 yards on 14 carries, and Jensen hooked up on four of six passes for 36 yards and also carried six times for 26 yards.

Carlos Bravo had six carries for 27 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards, and John Davidge ran four times for 22 yards and had a catch for six more. McDonald finished with two carries for 18 yards and Mark Ericson caught a pass for 14.

Linebacker Ivan Batinich led the defensive effort with 17 tackles. David Holtzman got in on 11 stops, and Omeed Ghaffarian had six tackles.

"Wilcox has a very strong running game, which made our defense work very hard," Gustafson said. "Our first half turnovers forced our defense to be on the field an awful lot. But the team came together on both sides of the ball in the second half and we showed the kind of team we believe we are."

Los Gatos will take a break from league play this week when the Wildcats host Los Altos in a non-league game on Oct. 19, 5:15 p.m.
