    The Prowler

Sometimes things happen for no apparent rhyme or reason. Sometimes, when the Prowler's plate is particularly full, that happens in this column, too! So, without any rambling preludes, here is a mixed bag of unrelated but fun things to do around Cat Town.

Fans of Los Gatos mountain artist Linda B. Spencer can scoot down Highway 9 to Gallery Saratoga at 14531 Big Basin Way, where she is this month's featured artist. Her show combines her trademark encaustics with collage work and Asian paper art. The term encaustic comes from the Greek for "burning in," but for anything more, this cat recommends visiting the exhibit. There's even time to meet Spencer at the artist's reception, which will take place on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.

Fans of the performing arts will definitely get a kick out of The Bald Soprano and Other Absurdities, a collection of short, wild and wacky plays in the West Valley College Studio Theatre, inside the music building at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. This production features the works of playwrights Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett and runs Oct. 22-24 and 28-31. For showtimes and ticket prices, call the WVC box office at 408.741.2058.

Speaking of this particular region, the West Valley Federated Women's Club invites interested local women to attend Celebrate the Century in Style, a morning and afternoon program highlighting a century of women's volunteerism. Held at La Rinconada Country Club, the event includes a fashion show, luncheon, boutique, door prizes and silent auction. Proceeds benefit local charities. Call 408.379.0734 or 408.264.8884 to make reservations.
