The Prowler

Halloween is still a week away, but since holiday calendars fill up fast, the Prowler decided it's none too soon to make mention of the following events.

On Oct. 30, the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of Parents Without Partners holds its annual Halloween Dance at the Los Gatos Elks Lodge, located at 105 Newell Ave. From 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., guests can enjoy treats, music and dancing. The Prowler hears there are several prizes for the best costumes. Admission is $8 for PWP members and $10 for non-members. Call 323-5147 for info.

Another event, this one for children and adults of all ages, is the Halloween costume contest at Los Gatos' own Borders Books, Music & Cafe. Dust off your spooky, sexy, sick or silly garb and head over to Borders on Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m. for a chance to win first, second and third place gift certificate prizes. There's candy and other treats as well as tricks by magician Dan McCarthy. The store is located at 50 University Ave. in Old Town.

Now through Oct. 31, Nob Hill supermarkets, including the one on Los Gatos Boulevard, are selling festive trick or treat bags at $1 each. Proceeds go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, the hospital does research on and treatment for serious childhood diseases, mainly cancer.

Finally, although the Yuletide season is still two months away, check out the 19th annual Christmas in the Studio, an arts and crafts show and sale by 41 California artists, including eight from Los Gatos. It takes place Oct. 29-31 at the San Jose Scottish Rite Center. For directions or show hours, call 379-4554.
