Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerWith the Prowler's favorite holiday around the corner, it's time to talk about tricks, treats and festive things to do for Halloween. Even though it's in its third year, the Haunted Forest may be unfamiliar to some folks. This frighteningly fun event takes places Oct. 24-31 in Oak Meadow Park. This cat's favorite haunt is the Phantom Express train ride (actually the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad), which takes riders through Vasona Park and a menagerie of live-action scenes and special effects. The Prowler hears that this year features a new "scary walking tour." Perhaps the guides won't notice if a fearless feline trots along. Cool live bands will play nightly. For the kids, the Spooky Hollow area has carnival games, a trick-or-treat tour, rides on the old-fashioned carousel and other safe fun. Call 354-6842 or 395-8162 for ticket info. Some brave souls will venture into the mountains on All Hallow's Eve for Byington Winery's Halloween Masquerade. The party, which begins at 7 p.m. and costs about $50, begins with a ghoulish feast of "Witch's Brew," "Screaming Stew," "Chilling Chowder," "Sinful Salads" and "Devil's Delights." For those whose costumes don't prohibit dancing, Alphie Dryffus Productions will play tunes all night. There's also a fortuneteller, souvenir wine glasses and costume contest prizes. Give Byington a scream at 354-1111, ext. 206, for reservations. Although pumpkin patches pop up everywhere, this cat couldn't help notice that some exotic animals have been visiting the patch at A to Z Tree Nursery on Winchester Boulevard. They're less scary for the little ones than the usual spooks!
