Los Gatos Weekly-TimesLos Gatos boys and girls suffer water polo lossesBy Dick Sparrer Cupertino, Lynbrook, Gunn and Monta Vista. All four are teams in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this fall, and all knocked off Los Gatos in boys' water polo action last week. But luckily for the Wildcats, only one of the four losses came in division play. Gatos dropped a tight 10-7 nod to powerful Cupertino in league play last week before losing three of four--all to De Anza Division teams--in the Connolly Tournament. The Cats beat Santa Clara 6-5 but lost to Lynbrook 4-3, Gunn 12-8 and Monta Vista 10-8 in a series of heartbreakers. Justin Shyba had two goals, but Los Gatos lost its Connelly opener 4-3 to Lynbrook. Shyba pitched in three goals, and Grant Wernick, Michael Berwald and Jason Canwing hit one each in the 6-5 win over Santa Clara. After suffering a tight 10-8 loss to Monta Vista, Los Gatos dropped a 12-8 decision to Gunn despite four goals by Shyba. Los Gatos had lost 10-7 to Cupertino in a division game prior to entering play in the Connelly. Phillip Roan poured in five goals, and Steve Westcott and Zach Lawryk also scored goals in the loss for the Wildcats. The loss left the Cats 2-2 in division play. In girls' water polo action, Rachel Stratton popped four goals and Alix Eastman added three, but Los Gatos lost 14-8 to St. Francis in De Anza Division play. Lisa Cristol also scored a goal to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.
