Our annual Best of Los Gatos issue hints at the many reasons why Los Gatans like their town so much. They enjoy the restaurants and the quaint shops. They love the quiet neighborhoods, the schools and the climate. And they appreciate the town traditions like the Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade and the annual Strawberry Festival.

But what do Los Gatans like best about the town? This year, we didn't beat around the bush; we came right out and asked: What's the best reason to live in Los Gatos?

In a resounding chorus that would do Barbra Streisand proud, our readers sang out loud and clear: It's the people!

It's shopkeepers who don't make customers feel like numbers and teachers who go the extra mile. It's volunteers who clear trails and hang banners downtown and cops who find time to work with young people. It's a bartender with wonderful stories to share, a surgeon who really listens to his patients and a real estate agent who makes time to be the weekly Reading Dude at a local elementary school.

And these are just a few of the people that make a great place to live the best place of all.

We asked a lot of other questions this year, too. And, as is our custom, we counted the ballots. In this, the largest issue we've ever published, we share the choices as determined by our readers: The Best of Los Gatos 1996.
