Meet high school district candidates

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District school board candidates present their viewpoints and answer questions on Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga High School's Little Theater, located on campus at 20300 Herriman Ave. The four candidates are Lynne Bauer, Cassandra Huston, Jackie Schmidt-Posner and Lorrie Wernick. The PTSAs of Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools are co-sponsors of the forum.

Carriage tradition needs extra help

The Los Gatos Downtown Association and the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to keep the downtown carriage rides alive during the holiday season. But to succeed, they'll need a boost from residents and merchants who don't want to see the tradition die.

The former chamber handled the popular rides before going out of business. Then the LGDA picked up the reins. Now the new chamber and the LGDA, two organizations with little or no money, are trying to recruit support--volunteers, trade and especially financial sponsorships--to ensure the carriage rides will be offered during the holiday season.

The commitment to book the rides must be made within a day or two; anyone who can help is asked to call Susan Conti at the Toll House, 395-3765.

Council candidates air their views

Los Gatos Town Council candidates will be in the Town Council Chambers, 110 E. Main St., Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The contestants are incumbent Linda Lubeck, former TV newscaster Jan Hutchins, former Los Gatos mayor Egon Jensen and college professor Frank Jones.

Voters will choose two of the candidates Nov. 5, when they vote on state and local ballot measures and pick a new U.S. president. Also on the ballot will be a pair of countywide measures--A and B--to levy a half-cent sales tax that would pay for transportation improvements.
