LGHS seniors earn high honors on national exam
Twenty-seven members of Los Gatos High School's Class of 2001 earned high honors in this year's National Merit Scholarship Competition. Of them, eight have gone on to place in the National Merit Semifinals, in which they have the opportunity to compete for scholarships worth up to $10,000 per year. Semifinalists are selected on the basis of scores earned on the 1999 PSAT, an initial screening exam taken by more than 1 million entrants. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent approximately 0.5 percent of each state's graduating high school seniors.
The semifinalists are Aviva Aron-Dine, Jason Chinn, Matthew Falkenhagen, Spencer Hawkins, Lisa Hwang, Brynna Levine, Russell Martin and Gina Strayer.
The other 19 students, who placed among the top 5 percent of competitors, are Kacey Ballard, Brett Bertocci, Gianna Cardinale, Tiffany Claar, Shauna Kanel, Denise Li, Peter Myers, Andrew Ow, Smita Reddy, Jason Roberts, Ryan Ross, Weston Rowan, Benjamin Shanker, Sarah Shoff, Derek Smith, Elizabeth Thai, Remy Timbrook, Nirali Vora and Meggy Wang.
