Former softball players remember glory days

Light bulbs flashed on over the heads of John Boitano and Mike Ferla, and they called for a reunion of 1950s softballers who played on a lighted diamond behind the old Los Gatos High School gym. This was also the diamond used by the town team and high schoolers.

Recently, players dined at Villa Felice and, with Boitano presiding, the men shared their memories.

Attending were Garth Adams, Ed Bealer, Pat Bealer, Tony Belillo, Andy and Mary Lou Butera, Charles and Virginia Cucco, Ferla, "Shrimpy" Garcia, Don Johnson, Gene Johnson, Steve Lepurin, Ted and Terry Maggi, Bill Mason, Mario Paolini, Ed Purdy, John Sanchez, Pete Sorensen, Bob Tatum, Dave and Dot Teeple, Gene Tobar and Anthony "Zip" Zaro.

Players remembered who their sponsors had been, that New York Avenue comprised part of the outfield and that the Lepurin home flanked right field.
