Ducks and geese need new homes
The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department is conducting a Duck Placement Program at Vasona Lake County Park. The park is home to more than 600 ducks. The goal is to reduce the population to wild breeds only.
About 60 ducks already have new homes throughout the county.
Families that wish to care for ducks can accept no more than five ducks from the park. They have to agree not to bring them back, and must watch a 10-minute slide presentation about waterfowl.
Uptown parking plan slated Nov. 4
A parking fee plan for businesses north of Route 9 is on the Town Council's agenda for Nov. 4. The plan will let 19 landowners pay fees for parking credits rather than build the parking town codes require for their shops.
The program will lift the ban on improvements for buildings with insufficient parking, letting Walgreens purchase parking credits to clear the way for a renovation the store has proposed.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers, 110 E. Main St.
Council rejects audit proposal
At last week's council meeting, Councilmember Linda Lubeck's proposal for an audit to find ways of saving the town money proved unpopular.
Town Manager Dave Knapp said auditing firms have saved some cities millions by pointing to inefficiencies or streamlining routine processes. But Los Gatos would probably have to spend at least $10,000 to find out if any money could be saved--and the benefits of an audit would be murky, he said, because the council already made cuts to the budget last summer to provide money for overdue street repairs.
Other councilmembers didn't want to commit money without assurance that savings could be found. They voted against requesting bids from auditing agencies.
