Only the best make it to the finals of Major League Soccer's Dribble, Pass & Shoot competition each year, and Lindsay Dickerson made it.

But not only did the Los Gatos 9-year-old make it, she turned out to be the best of the best, winning the national championship in her age group at the competition held at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

Dickerson finished first in the girls' 8-9 age group at the event held in conjunction with the MLS Cup, professional soccer's national championship.

At the Oct. 15 finals, Dickerson defeated three other finalists from the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Dallas Burn. She represented the San Jose Earthquakes in Washington after winning local and sectional events to beat out a field of Northern California competitors.

In the Dribble, Pass & Shoot competition, players shoot at targets in a goal worth various point totals; pass through narrow zone marked by corner flags; and dribble through a slalom course earning points for speed and control.

Dickerson, a student at St. Mary's School in Los Gatos, is a member of the West Valley Crossfire, a girls under-10 Class 3 team based in San Jose.
